World class Orthopaedic Hand Surgery comes to Wilmslow Health Centre

In May 2011, a new world class Hand Surgery Service was at Wilmslow Health Centre. Here is an article originally published on wilmslow.co.uk at the time of launch.

“The Service will be provided by consultants from Wrightington Hospital, which is a centre of excellence for Orthopaedic surgery. The team of experts from Wrightington are led by Professor Raj Murali who is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and hand and wrist specialist.

They will treat patients with various hand conditions in the Wilmslow Surgery, the aim of which is to have a one-stop-shop, closer to home, where hand conditions are assessed by the team of hospital experts, blood tests and electrophysiology tests performed and surgery offered all in one day. The clinics and operations will initially take place on a Saturday with the potential for more clinics to be added on weekdays.

Dr Amar Ahmed a partner at Wilmslow Health Centre stated: “We’re very excited to work with Wrightington Hospital which is famed for its expertise in Orthopaedic surgery. Wrightington pioneered the hip replacement and has been a world famous centre of Orthopaedic excellence ever since. It’s great to offer such expertise to patients in such a convenient setting.

“Better still, it doesn’t cost the NHS any more to have such a high specification service out here in the community. It’s actually more cost effective without any compromise on quality. Patients love it as they can be assessed and treated on a Saturday so there is minimal disruption to their busy lives.”

Professor Raj Murali, the surgeon who will be leading the service said: “We are delighted to be working with our colleagues at Wilmslow Health Centre to offer our world class hand and wrist surgery services conveniently to the patients in Central and East Cheshire.”
