What are Physician Associates (PAs)?
Physician Associates (PAs) are trained healthcare professionals who work closely with doctors to provide medical care. While PAs play an important role in our team, it’s important to note that they are not doctors. They cannot prescribe medication and always work under the supervision of a senior GP. They work at all practices within the CHAW Primary Care Network of Practices.
How Do PAs Work in Our Practice?
In our practice, PAs work alongside doctors as part of our healthcare team. They are trained to work independently within certain limits, but their work is overseen by a GP to ensure patients receive the best care.
What Can PAs Do?
PAs are trained to:
- Take medical histories and conduct physical exams.
- Assess patients with undiagnosed or long-term conditions.
- Develop treatment and management plans.
- Carry out certain diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Offer health advice and disease prevention support.
However, PAs cannot:
- Prescribe medication.
- Request imaging like X-rays or CT scans.
PAs’ Training
PAs complete an intensive two-year postgraduate program, including 3,200 hours of study and clinical practice. This training builds on an undergraduate degree in health or life sciences, preparing them to effectively support GPs in patient care.
Why PAs Are Valuable
PAs have been part of the NHS since 2003. They provide essential support in general practice, allowing us to offer more appointments and reduce waiting times. They work under the supervision of senior GPs, ensuring safe, high-quality care.
